What Exactly Is a Pizzelle?
If you’ve never tried a pizzelle, you’re not alone, but once you do, you’ll wonder why they’re not everywhere. Crisp, golden, and laced with a touch of sweetness, pizzelles are one of those simple joys that feel both timeless and brand new.
Originally from the Abruzzo region of Italy, pizzelles are considered one of the oldest cookies in the world, dating back to the 8th century. Traditionally made for weddings and holidays, they were pressed using ornate irons, each with its own family design.
At their core, pizzelles are thin, round waffle cookies made from simple ingredients: flour, eggs, sugar, butter, and flavorings. They’re pressed flat using a patterned iron, giving them a delicate snowflake look. The texture is crisp but tender, and depending on the flavor, you’ll taste just the right hint in every bite.
I first fell in love with pizzelles for their simplicity. No frosting, no overloaded ingredients, and not too sweet. It was a light, beautiful cookie that complimented our favorite drinks, whether it was a latte or a milk tea boba. They could be dipped in chocolate, wrapped up as gifts, or eaten out of the bag. There’s no wrong way to enjoy one.
At Pizzelle Lodge, every cookie is handmade in California. Using a press, good ingredients, and a little extra time. No two are exactly alike - and that’s the point. If you’ve never had a pizzelle, we hope you’ll try one soon. Follow along for updates - this might become your new favorite cookie.
